TMD and Tinnitus

One of the primary signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder, TMD, is tinnitus, or ringing of the ears. This condition is annoying for most people but is sometimes debilitating, especially if left untreated. A neuromuscular dentist specializes in bringing the jaw back into its optimal alignment; misalignment of the jaw is the underlying problem that causes TMD. There are two types of tinnitus:

Subjective
Objective

Subjective tinnitus means only you can hear the sound, which is not caused by external stimulus. Subjective tinnitus is often difficult to diagnose as the doctor can only rely on the patient's description of the problem and perceived benefits. Objective tinnitus is actually audible to the physician and may be related to blood flowing through the ear or muscles spasms in the inner ear. Since the doctor is able to also perceive the sounds, it is easier to identify, but not necessarily easier to treat. In order to treat TMD and tinnitus, the neuromuscular dentist first attempts to determine what your natural jaw alignment is. Using advanced tools like sonography, electromyography, and computerized jaw tracking, a detailed picture of your current jaw condition is mapped. After relaxing the muscles with gentle massage or TENS electrotherapy, your ideal position is found and a treatment plan created that will restore your alignment.
